The Odyssey paid its first visit to Vandy in over 20 years. The mauling of Vanderbilt was indicative of the pre-Clark Lea era. Halftime score: 42-3. The Hotty Toddys were ecstatic that Trinidad Chambliss was doing Trinidad Chambliss things, which included throwing a TD pass to a burly tackle.
Several factors contributed to the first half blowout. Ole Miss was the beneficiary of a questionable pass interference call in the first quarter. Then, with Vandy trailing 28-3, with just over a minute left in the first half, their coaching staff had a brain fart. With the ball deep in their own territory, the smart thing to do would be to milk the clock and get to the dressing room – especially with a freshman QB. Instead, Vandy threw a pass on first down. Incomplete. Later in the series Jared Curtis dropped back to pass in his own end zone. Pick 6. As if the football gods showed their displeasure for the Commodores’ strategy, yet another turnover in the last minute in the first half produced yet another Rebel touchdown. The entire second half devolved into garbage time.
Is Jared Curtis worth the reported $4 million that he was paid to ditch Georgia for Vandy? The early results are mixed but Curtis was done no favors by his receivers Saturday.
For Ole Miss, Saturday’s rout was important to get rid of the stench from their beatdown in Gainesville. Next up is a huge home game against a scorching hot Missouri team. The story line of the former Ole Miss QB, Austin Simmons, who will be across the field from his former backup QB, who Wally Pipped him, is ironic. Chambliss characterizes this scenario as “weird.” The bigger picture is that the winner of next week’s game will be looking good for the playoff.
Saturday night got even better for Ole Miss diehards. Lane (“I needed Oxford more than Oxford needed me”) Kiffin’s LSU team lost in overtime at Kentucky. Serves the vagabond right!
